Richard Hughes, a former British cycling champion turned physiotherapist, has been sentenced to jail for sexually assaulting a 70-year-old woman during a massage therapy session.
Hughes, 53, groped the woman as she lay face-down receiving treatment for sciatica. He admitted to acting destructively after a bitter divorce and claimed he needed help.
Despite Hughes’ plea and concerns about his family and clinic, the judge sentenced him to one year in jail, dismissing his claims as emotional manipulation.
Hughes, who retired from cycling due to injury, admitted to three counts of sexual assault. The victim, horrified by his actions, described feeling dirty and disgusted.
In his defense, Hughes cited severe anxiety and depression, stating he was suicidal during the incident. His lawyer acknowledged his client’s distress but emphasized that such behavior was out of character.
The court ordered Hughes to register as a sex offender and faces professional repercussions from the Health and Care Professions Council.
