Nex, who was non-binary and used they/them pronouns, passed away in February, one day after being involved in a fight at Owasso High School.

The cause of death was revealed in a partial autopsy report, which stated that Nex died from taking a combination of medications.

Before his death, Nex had been involved in a brief altercation at school, which was followed by a visit to the hospital due to shallow breathing and other concerning symptoms.

Despite national attention and speculation surrounding the circumstances of Nex’s death, police had suspected suicide throughout their investigation.

The release of the autopsy report confirmed this suspicion.

Following Nex’s passing, vigils were held across the United States in his honour.

The incident has sparked conversations about bullying, particularly concerning LGBTQ+ individuals, as well as criticism of laws in Oklahoma regarding restroom and changing room usage based on sex assigned at birth.
