Canada witness historic growth in population

Statistics Canada has announced that Canada’s population has reached an all-time high of 40.77 million in 2023. This represents a 3.2% increase from the previous year and is the fastest rate of growth since 1957.

The surge in population is mainly due to temporary immigration and has significant implications for Canadian society.

The housing shortage crisis has worsened, causing house prices to soar and affordability levels to plummet, which has impacted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s approval ratings. .

According to Statistics Canada, international migration has played a pivotal role in driving population growth, with 97.6% of the increase stemming from immigration, both permanent and temporary.

Despite recent government initiatives to limit the influx of international students and non-permanent residents, the latest data from Statscan indicates that approximately 2,661,784 non-permanent residents were residing in Canada as of January 1, 2024.

As Canada relies on immigration to bolster its labour force and economic vitality, policymakers are facing mounting pressure to address the housing shortage crisis and maintain economic growth while managing the country’s population growth.
